Artist Statement:What strikes me in art is ambiguity. From an early age painting and drawing have been a fundamental part of my life. From 2002 to 2007 I attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, Poland. Through my studies I began to develop my personal process of analysing my surroundings and constructing metaphors and allegories of what I perceived. The human body, which I had studied for a long time before I started to study at the Academy, stopped to be only an empty form, a shell. Gradually it began to be a part of unique and personal language - my non-verbal way of communicating. At the same time my painting technique was developing. I found the intensity of oil paint to be the most fitting the level of emotion I want to capture in the painting. The rough three dimensional texture of my paintings completes the two dimensional canvas. The tables I painted seem to be made out of rough timber, and dresses worn by silent women become thick wool-like fabric. Sometimes it even feels to me that the people I paint want to free themselves from the restricted area of the canvas, almost as if they would like to hide and keep anonymity. It also might be that painted characters are engaged in their own activities and that is why they are not bothered with the things that happen outside their world. Another detail I frequently apply is defining the human figure with a thick outline. This feature is first drawn with acrylic, pencil or oil pastel on the bare, white canvas and remains unmodified to form a part of completed painting. The forms of human bodies are often simplified. Therefore the story is developed through gesture, facial expression and frame configuration. I believe that the fundamental part of my artwork is the exploration of human nature. I analyse solitude in terms of the single human being and in context of society. The atmosphere of my paintings is meditative and I myself have to mellow out very much to paint. I find the whole creation process is a long journey, full of unexpected happenings, long stops and retrospections. This is the time when I am looking into a human nature and it is here I find myself.Daria Pietryka
