Padraig McCaul

Artist Padraig McCaul has had several successful solo shows in West Cork and Clare however this is his first major Dublin Solo Show. The light of which I speak is a unique collaboration between Padraig and songwriter Will Merriman. In 1798 a small force of French Troops landed off the coast of North Mayo in support of the Irish uprising against the British forces. These events provide the inspiration for “The Light of which I speak”, where the west of Ireland Landscapes and silent houses of McCaul’s paintings provide the backdrop for Merriman’s songs. “As a painter I am interested in portraying the beauty and power of the West of Ireland landscape. Man-made elements such as buildings and roads are softened and blended in to become part of that landscape. I leave it to the viewer to find their own stories in my paintings, their own connections, to place themselves among the fields, under the cliffs, among the silent houses. In June 2008 I approached Will with the idea of us working together on a collaborative project whereby he would tell, through his songs, some of the stories that he saw in my paintings. The French landing off the coast of Mayo in 1798 provided the perfect setting for these stories".Padraig McCaul.
