Máire Cregan

Máire Cregan graduated from NCAD with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art Painting in 1996. She has exhibited work in Dublin, Sligo, Limerick, Belfast and Glasgow. Most recently she has just completed a commissioned body of work for premises in Dublin's developing docklands in which she responded to the locality where the works are housed. “The subject matter I refer to in my paintings allows me to explore the lines and markings which result from repetitious work or actions whether they are the actions of people in their daily lives or the impact of action in nature. The lines and markings have a resonance that speaks of the process that created them and as such are chroniclers of time. The colours in my paintings are at times a response to local colour, or mood, or the atmosphere generated by places, people, and emotions. In the context of contempary art practice my paintings challenge the omnipresent influence of the grid. The lines that represent repetitious movements create grid-like structures which confine and control both our lives and nature. Sometimes these lines are visible, sometimes not. The use of grids and structures regulate and constrain and a consequence of these structures is that individuality and difference can be stifled. Colour and marks emerging from previous layers recognize and celebrate the representation of difference despite the grid. I accept that this interpretation of my work might be considered quite literal but I put it forward in an effort to make my paintings accessable, while at the same time I would hope that there is enough ambiguity in the work to leave them open to individual interpretation. “
