Martin Stone

Martin was born in 1963, in Cardiff Wales. He moved to Ireland in 2004. Martin began painting in school and had his first professional commission at 15. For many years he made a living as a mural painter and working as a public artist. His work is characterized by sensitive handling of figurative subject matter with expressionist qualities of colour, viewpoints and painterly qualities; primarily he is an intuitive painter. "I value the importance of passion, intuition and spontaneity, which I temper with discipline. My work reflects the passions in my life, my family, the landscape, portraiture and the painting of the figure, particularly the nude, which I regularly feature in my work. Many of my figures can be read as caught in a kind of monumental stillness, a solitary woman on a bed, figure on a beach, young people sleeping. I am influenced by a diverse range of artists such as, Edward Hopper, Turner, the Impressionists as well as the American expressionist painters, John Skelton and the Euston Road School of the 1940’s and 1950’s. “In a world of racket and clamour my work strives to show the quiet, still moments that speak to us all”. Educated At: Chelsea College of Arts, Masters Degree 1993 Birmingham College of Art BA Hons 1985, 1988 Cardiff College of Art, Fine Arts Foundation Diploma 1984 University of Glamorgan, Post Graduate Masters Diploma 2004.
